Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah, is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents separated when she aged 10 years old. Latifah was born and brought up in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah was the stage name she used before she was eight years old. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was in the basketball team of her high school squad. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah used to be a member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. It was signed by Latifah, and released her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
